Dr. Argueso's research focuses on the structure and function of mucins—highly O-glycosylated, high molecular weight glycoproteins that constitute a major component of the protective biofilm on the surface of all epithelial cells. His laboratory has developed in vitro methods to demonstrate the importance of mucin O-glycans and carbohydrate-binding proteins of the epithelial cell surface in maintaining the integrity of the mucosal barrier at the ocular surface.
